Trump says arranging Zelensky-Putin meeting, trilateral talks
Tuesday, 19 August 2025 07:35 WIB | GLOBAL ECONOMIC |Ekonomi Global

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday that he was arranging a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to discuss an end to their longstanding conflict.

Trump also raised the possibility of trilateral talks with the two after their initial meeting.

"I called President Putin, and began the arrangements for a meeting, at a location to be determined, between President Putin and President Zelenskyy. After that meeting takes place, we will have a Trilat, which would be the two Presidents, plus myself," Trump said in a Truth.Social post.

Trump's post came shortly after he flagged a positive meeting with Zelensky and several European heads of state at the Oval Office. This was in wake of a meeting with Putin in Alaska last week, as Trump moves to broker a ceasefire in the long-running conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

On Sunday, Trump said a Russia-Ukraine peace deal could involve Kyiv giving up more territory to Moscow while dropping its bid to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)-- two notions that Ukraine has repeatedly rejected.

The country is seeking security guarantees from the U.S., with a Financial Times report suggesting that Ukraine could offer to buy $100 billion of U.S. weapons, funded by European aid, to get get said guarantees.

Trump said on Monday that the U.S. would help guarantee Ukraine's security, but did not specify the terms of any guarantees. A peace deal appears far from imminent, especially given that Putin has shown little indication of reaching a ceasefire. Moscow's forces were also seen steadily advancing in eastern Ukraine.

Trump has agreed with Moscow's calls for a comprehensive peace deal instead of a ceasefire, despite multiple calls from European leaders that a ceasefire precede any direct talks with Russia.

Still, Trump has also threatened more economic sanctions against Russia over the 3-1/2 year war. He recently threatened to impose steep trade tariffs against major Russian oil buyers China and India.
